It’s easy to plop your kids down in front of the CannonSatellite.com children’s channels when the weather gets cold but how about adding in some reading, too? If your kids are more technologically inclined than they are to read, here are a few suggestions for getting a book in their hands.
Find the Right Book: Pick something related to their favorite show, for example, and watch them become more interested. Particularly a book that has a TV plotline pace can help your kids learn to enjoy reading.
Make it a Family Affair: Turn off the TV at least two nights a week and institute family reading time. Not only will it encourage your kids to read more but you’ll feel yourself growing as you make more time for reading, too!
Read to Them: If your kids truly hate to read, start off slow by reading TO them. Pick a book that’s got chapters that leave the reader hanging so they’ll want more and try to make it a nightly event, just before bed. It’s great quality time with your kids, too.

Most parents know they should read to their children before bed, but few parents know why reading to a child at bedtime is so important. Children love to spend one-on-one time with their parents and being read to at bedtime gives them that uninterrupted time with mommy or daddy where, to the child, it seems that they are the only thing that matters in the parents’ world. Reading to children before bed helps them learn, not only how to read and how words look and sound but how to handle life experiences as well. As characters in the story handle difficult situations, the child learns how to handle those situations in a safe environment. Reading to a child increases his or her vocabulary and sets a good foundation for further learning experiences and encourages children to use their imaginations and be creative. Reading to a child at bedtime promotes better sleep. Tests have shown that children should have a half hour of quiet relaxed time without television, computers, or other noisy distractions like video games before they go to bed to enable them to fall asleep more deeply and easily, thus making for a happier, well-rested child the next morning.

For any mother-to-be, knowing what to expect during and after your pregnancy can be a major concern. Reading one of the many books available on what to expect throughout your pregnancy will help you understand the changes you are experiencing. Finding books that will guide you through each step of your pregnancy can help to ease some of the concerns you may have, especially if it is your first time being pregnant. Knowing what is happening during the first, second, and third trimesters of your pregnancy will help give you peace of mind.

While you are pregnant you should also read a book about what to expect once your baby is born. Caring for a newborn baby can be an overwhelming experience if you do not know what to expect in the first few weeks. There are many books available that will help you get a good idea of what to expect once your bundle of joy arrives. Reading parenting books during your pregnancy can help you learn about things like changing your newborn baby and giving your baby a bath. You can also read books that will help you learn about what to expect during your baby’s first year.

Reading is essential and opens doors for the mind to enter. When you pick up a book, you’re doing more than just repeating written words. You are stimulating the mind and entering into another world. It is imperative that children get into the habit of reading while at an early age when the mind is still in its developing stage. After a certain age, it will become a difficult task to try to get your child to read, so start early! There are a lot of children books on the market, some are well known like Dr. Suess and some are fairly new. Let’s take a look at two types of books catered to kids, and determine which one best suits your child’s learning style.

Popup books are great books for visual learners. Even if your child is not that interested in the words, they can use the pictures to piece together what is going on in the book. This alone is a great learning tool, and teaches your child to use their context clues, only difference is, they are using the pictures as clues as opposed to the words.

Sing-a-longs are great for auditory learners. Your child might be an auditory learner if they show more interest in the words than the pictures. Regardless of what type of learner your child is, it can be a good idea to have both types of books in the house. Happy reading!
